School is unsafe for my child to attend at the moment.

If your child is experiencing bullying at school, it is understandable and appropriate to prioritise their safety and emotional wellbeing above school attendance. Safety is a foundational requirement for learning and development.  Put simply, learning cannot happen in a state of fear or distress.

In these circumstances, you may decide to temporarily keep your child off school while working with the school to resolve the situation. During this time away from the classroom, it is important to ensure your child continues to access education at home to prevent falling behind and to support their overall progress.

In the UK, education is a legal requirement, not school attendance. Parents are responsible for ensuring their child receives a full-time education suitable to their age, ability, and any special needs. That said, at NSABA we recognise that most schools provide high-quality education and are well equipped to meet children’s academic needs.

To assist families during any short-term absence from school, we have compiled a list of carefully selected learning resources, organised by Key Stages, to help you continue your child’s education confidently at home. Click here to access these. Remember to choose stage for your child based on their ability.

Please note: while some schools may threaten fines for non-attendance, it is extremely poor practice to do so especially when a bullying situation is being actively resolved. Such action could also be counterproductive and liable to challenge.  Where schools lose sight of this we will support them to understand this. â€‹
